Another Emotional Roller Coaster

This week = another emotional roller coaster.

Lucy’s surgery was a HUGE success. The tumor was taken out completely. There were risks to nerves connected to her rectum and bladder, however, she has pooped and peed. Pathology results showed that the tumor was 100% benign which means the chemo took care of all of the cancer.

So, why aren’t we home yet? Because LJ won’t drink. We don’t know why. We don’t know whether she doesn’t remember how to suck or she just doesn’t want to do it.

We have tried EVERYTHING for the past week.

  • Bottle with formula
  • Bottle with Pedialite
  • Sipping cup with both
  • Straw with both
  • Syringe with both
  • Open up with both
  • Medicine cup with both
  • Special nose cup with both
  • Honey teddy bear container with a straw
  • Special sip cup with both
  • We even dropped both types of liquids in her mouth with a straw
  • And some other things I can’t remember right now

With all of that said, we hit a milestone today. We got her strawberry Pediasure with a syringe and she took down an oz.! Also, she’s eating up a storm. However, she has picky taste buds. Go figure.

This has to be one of the most frustrating experiences I have had. I can’t force her to drink. This can’t be fixed with medicine. It’s exhausting. She doesn’t like to be stuck in a hospital room where she can’t get down and crawl. She doesn’t like being hooked up to fluids and she doesn’t understand that she has the power to go home… if she drinks.

I am thrilled that she is going to be okay and will lead a healthy normal life. With that said, I get so frustrated that she’s not drinking. I fight back tears because I can’t climb, yet another mountain, for her. I know there are no silly prayers, so I ask you to one more time pray for her to drink. We need a break from the hospital.

Thanks.

  1. There’s nothing silly about it. I can’t even imagine how frustrating that must be. I’ve been praying for you and your sweet girl, and I’ll continue to do so — specifically that she will drink.

  2. Have y’all tried popsicles? I’ve seen the electrolyte popsicles or freeze pedialyte and try it the old fashioned way.
